Signs, Signs, Everywhere There’s Signs

It seems everywhere you look there are signs about organizing. Everyone has a different rule or regulation to follow to get that optimized kitchen or closet. The industry has spawned lots of products to use toward this goal. Some are baskets, some are clear plastic, some are elevated on the ceiling of the garage! The cruxt of the task however demands personal attention which cannot be considered in general rules doled out by organizing gurus no matter how many books they have sold because yours is unique. There are very few products that are a sure thing to bring your home to an organized state. There are so many exceptions to the rules that in fact the only rules are very simple and basic and don’t demand purchasing anything.

Love or Use

One rule that applies everywhere is to keep only what you use or love. Granted that may change daily if you fall in and out of love with things daily. But in general if you love something it tends to stay in that category. If you are storing things you don’t love or use you are missing the advantage of space! Ample space to move, create, and relax is vital to any home.

Name It

What’s in a name? Everything – if it must work in a system in coordination with other moving parts. When you pick up an item wondering where it should live in your home first name it and name what category it belongs. Is it a tool belonging in the garage? Is it an appliance belonging in the kitchen? Is it a blanket belonging in the bedroom or closet? Don’t put the item in question down until you actually name it and its categories.

A Home

In order for you to identify where something is there must be a set place where it resides in the home. It is stored there when not in use and replaced there after use as soon as possible after use. Nothing else lives in that space for any time and the space will remind you it is out of the network of tools to be used because it can’t be found. You should train all inhabitants of your home to regularly return used items to their homes as part of the usage requirement and respect of the house and homeowner.


The home of an item depends on the space configuration available in each home. If it is a blender that you use in the kitchen you want to try to store it in the kitchen. But if there is absolutely no space in the kitchen store it the next closest area to the kitchen should be considered. The harder it is to access the less likely it will be accessed and therefor end up being dead weight wherever it is.


Another universal rule is that the more you use something the more accessible it must be. There must be one motion to access things you use daily. Once a week usage might mean it merits a place under something else requiring two motions to access it. If it is used only seasonally you might find it agreeable to store it in the basement, garage, attic or guest bedroom closet. Temperature and other conditions should be considered.

Like Things Together

Whenever possible put like things together. All scissors together for example, unless of course you have a collection of sewing things which in that case the fabric scissors belong with that group unless of course you use them daily in which case they may belong in the command center pencil holder.


Another vital rule that applies to every home is separation. Systems cannot be made without parts working together. In order to make a part you have to name it, put it together with other like items used together creating a category which should always remain separate from other categories. Separate means space in between the categories. If categories are mixed there is no longer a system. Always guard the space between! It is as important as the thing because if you can’t find the thing you might as well not own it.
